He made the first find next to a parking lot in Alvesta, on his way home from work.

- I saw that the edges of the leaves of some bushes next to the parking lot were gnawed, it is quite typical for the species park eared whirligig, says Martin Sjödahl.

"Thousands of park corona vortices"

He started digging around a bit in the soil - and to his great joy found the species he suspected.

- There were thousands of park-ear whorls in the bushes there, says Martin Sjödahl.

Shortly afterwards, he made his next find – a skink beetle in the same place.

- None of them have been discovered in Småland before, he says.

Three species in two days

But two new insect species in Småland were apparently not enough.

The next day, while eating lunch outdoors at his job in Växjö, he observed a third.

- A large flower fly arrived, a Volucella zonaria, it has no Swedish name.

You could say it looks a bit like a hornet, says Martin Sjödahl.

What do you think about having made these findings?

- You could say it's a bit double.

I think it's both fun and exciting to find new species, but at the same time it's an indication that things are happening with our biological diversity, says Martin Sjödahl.

See pictures of the finds in the clip above.
