The legal organization OVD-Info consists of voluntary lawyers and volunteers who help those who are accused of discrediting the army or spreading false information, or are arrested during demonstrations or other protest actions against the war.

Over 3,400 people have so far been convicted under the new laws.

Among these are most administrative cases, with fines as a penalty.

But 75 cases are so-called criminal cases, where the accused risks up to fifteen years in prison.

- We believe that this is about scaring people from daring to oppose the war, says Daria Korolenko, analyst and lawyer at OVD-Info.

"Connivance"

Several cases have received a lot of attention in the media, both in Russia and abroad.

For example, a person has been convicted of writing the word special ops in quotation marks on social media.

Another case concerns a person who stood next to a demonstration.

He was accused of "silent consent" and would have understood, according to the court, that the actions in the square were aimed at discrediting the Russian army.

The man was fined 45,000 rubles.

- This goes against both the Russian constitution and all international laws and regulations.

It is pure repression, says Daria Korolenko.
