In a letter it sent to the King of Bahrain and his Crown Prince, the human rights organizations urged to ensure that Al-Singace receives the necessary medical care and protect him from torture and ill-treatment.

Abdul Jalil Al-Singace, 60, is serving a life sentence for his role in the demonstrations calling for democratic reform in Bahrain in 2011. He has been on hunger strike since July 8, 2021, ie more than 400 days without solid food.

The organizations said that Al-Singace was imprisoned for nearly 12 years, "for exercising his human right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly."

"We are deeply concerned about his current health, especially that his blood sugar level has become very low. We are particularly concerned about the delay and denial of access to essential medicines prescribed by his doctor, including tablets necessary for his nervous system and body functions and eye drops, in flagrant disregard of his doctors' instructions," the letter said. ".

According to the organizations that signed the letter, Al-Singace suffers from post-polio syndrome and many other health problems, including severe intermittent headaches, a prostate problem, inflammation in his shoulder joints, tremors, numbness, and poor eyesight.

The letter was signed by Human Rights Watch, the Global Coalition for Citizen Participation, the English PEN, the International PEN, Democracy Now for the Arab World, the European Center for Democracy and Human Rights, Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain, the Scholars at Risk Network, and Freedom House. The Committee to Protect Journalists, the Gulf Center for Human Rights, the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, the Project on Middle East Democracy, the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy, and Amnesty International.
