Montenegro expels a Russian diplomat, and Moscow vows to respond

Montenegro, a small country that was part of the former Yugoslavia, ordered a Russian diplomat on Friday to leave the country over what it called violations of norms, prompting Moscow to vow to respond.

Montenegro announced the measure on Twitter, but did not go into details.

The Balkan country has joined the ranks of those involved in imposing international sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

"Russia will provide an appropriate response," a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry was quoted by the TASS news agency as saying, when asked about a possible response.

In March and April, Montenegro's foreign ministry ordered a total of five Russian diplomats to leave the country due to violations of diplomatic norms.

TASS reported that Russia ordered a Montenegrin diplomat in late May to leave its territory.
