China News Service, Hong Kong, August 12. The Hong Kong SAR government published a list of 13 newly appointed justices of the peace in the Gazette on the 12th, including the fifth chief executive of the Hong Kong SAR, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.

  According to the list, Carrie Lam and many former officials of the SAR government, including Chen Fan, Chen Zhaoshi, Nie Dequan, Xue Yongheng, Huang Jinxing, Yau Tenghua, Bai Yunliu, Zhu Naizhang, and Deng Yihai, were appointed as unofficial justices of the peace.

  The Deputy Secretary for Administration, Mr Cheuk Wing-hing, the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Mr Sun Dong, and the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Yau Yinghua, were appointed as Official Justices of the Peace.

  Deng Yihai's appointment will take effect on October 8 this year, and the appointments of the rest will take effect on August 12 this year.

  The SAR government stated that the main function of a justice of the peace is to inspect correctional institutions, detention centres or other institutions to ensure that they are effectively managed and that no one is unfairly treated or exploited.

Justices of the Peace ensure that complaints made by individuals are dealt with in a fair and transparent manner.
