One would not wish it on anyone, but the Russian tourists who have just fled the beaches of Crimea may feel a glimpse of the untold suffering that millions of Ukrainians experience every day.

Yes, it is Putin's war, and yes, the sanctions are intended to target the guilty as much as possible.

But every citizen is also held responsible for his or her state: Some people need a visa for certain trips, others don't.

The free world must never take Putin as a role model.

Any contempt for everything Russian as such is forbidden.

But everyone must be aware that Russia is waging a criminal war of conquest that denies an entire nation the right to exist.

Putin is not waging this war alone and not without consent.

Hopefully Chancellor Olaf Scholz knows that too.

Absolute priority for freedom and security of Ukraine

Of course, if you go to western countries, it is easier to get a complete picture.

But everyone should also know what the West defends and what many Russians also appreciate.

Therefore, an end to the generous granting of tourist visas to Russian citizens would not be an inhuman measure.

Rather, this step forces one to reflect on the fact that freedom is fragile and threatened.

In any case, restoring the freedom and security of the battered and fleeing Ukrainians has absolute priority - and not the occupiers' right to undisturbed beach holidays.
