The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced on Wednesday that it had launched a vaccination campaign against meningitis in Savoie.

Some residents of 112 municipalities in the department are concerned.

This decision comes after the discovery in the vicinity of Chambéry (Savoie) of 12 people infected with a new variant of the disease, reports France Bleu Pays de Savoie.

Among these patients, one died and two suffered from a severe form of meningococcal B infection. On its website, the ARS specified that the patients are aged 16 to 24 years.

They live, work or go out for “most” in the Chambéry sector.

Babies also affected

All variants combined, 27 diagnoses of meningitis were made in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region between August 1, 2021 and July 1, 2022. The hitherto unknown strain can contaminate young children.

Vaccination is therefore offered to individuals aged 16 to 24, but also to babies aged 2 and under.
