The fire that started on Tuesday in southwestern

France

has burned some

6,800 hectares

in the Gironde and Landes departments until Thursday, with effects also on land connections with Spain and limitations on the transit of heavy vehicles in the

Biriatou

pass .

The Prefecture of

New Aquitaine and Gironde

explained this Thursday early that 10,000 people have been evacuated as a result of flames that are still out of control.

"The conditions are especially difficult", the authorities have recognized, due to the high temperatures -

up to 40 degrees

during these days - and the drought.

Some 1,100 troops participate in the extinction tasks, waiting for "additional reinforcements".

The Prime Minister,

Elisabeth Borne

, plans to visit the area together with the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmamnin, throughout the day.

More than a dozen homes have burned in the Belin-Béliet area, with no evidence of personal injury so far.

The

A63 motorway

, which reaches the Spanish border, remains closed in both directions as a precautionary measure.
