9 killed, 7 missing in record rain in South Korea

 Nine people have died, seven others are missing, and more than 2,500 homes and buildings have been inundated by this week's record rains in the South Korean capital, Seoul, and elsewhere in central and eastern regions, officials said on Wednesday.


A total of 525 mm of rain fell in Seoul from Monday to Wednesday morning, while Yangpyeong, 45 km east of Seoul, recorded 526.2 mm of accumulated rain during this period, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

Nine people died, five in Seoul, three in Gyeonggi Province and one in Gangwon Province, while seven others were missing, four from Seoul and three from Gyeonggi Province, and 17 others were injured, according to government data.


A total of 2,676 homes and buildings were submerged, mostly in Seoul.


About 570 people from 398 families, mostly from the wider Seoul area, were displaced, leaving them to stay in local schools and gyms.


Officials said another 1,253 people from 724 families across the country were temporarily evacuated.
