China began its largest-ever drills near Taiwan last week, a day after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a controversial visit to Taiwan.

As recently as Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a statement that the de facto independent Tawian is part of China's territory.

On the night of Tuesday, Taiwan began an artillery exercise with live ammunition, where it practiced defending itself against a Chinese attack.

Foreign Minister Joseph Wu now because China is preparing an invasion, reports the AFP news agency.

According to Taiwan, the Chinese goal is to "change the status quo" in the Pacific region.

A spokesperson for Taiwan's Eighth Army Corps tells AFP that the exercises have been planned for a long time and that hundreds of soldiers are participating in the exercises, where over 40 artillery pieces of the howitzer type have been used.
