Residence permits in the European Union return to the pre-Corona level

The number of residence permits issued by European Union countries last year returned to its level before the Corona crisis.

Today, Tuesday, the European Statistics Authority, "Eurostat" in Brussels, stated that the number of these permits reached 2.95 million in 2021, an increase of 31% compared to 2020, when the Corona crisis broke out in the countries of the bloc.

It is possible to issue residence permits to citizens from outside the bloc countries for the purposes of, for example, work or study, for family reasons or to seek international protection.

According to the authority, the number of residence permits issued by Poland alone last year reached 967,300, equivalent to a third of the total permits issued by the bloc, followed by Spain with 371,800 permits and France with 285,200 permits.

The number of permits issued decreased in a few countries of the bloc, including Germany, where the number of permits decreased by 41% to reach 185 thousand and 200 permits.

Ukrainians came at the top of the most nationalities with residence permits in the European Union in 2021, obtaining 875 thousand and 800 permits, and 83% of these Ukrainians arrived in Poland.
