In June, the Environmental Protection Agency's mountain safety council carried out a survey in Sälen, Vemdalen, Funäsfjällen and Åre, among others, as well as STF's largest mountain stations along the Swedish mountain chain.

- It is worrying if more and more people have a deteriorating safety awareness, but it has a connection to the fact that there are many new mountain hikers, says Per-Olov Wikberg at the Mountain Safety Council.

Underestimating the weather - overestimating their mobile phone

The most common mistake is to underestimate the rapid changes in mountain weather.

But overestimating one's cell phone coverage and one's own fitness are also listed as common mistakes.

- If you are new to the mountains, the most important thing is to prepare.

It's not at all stupid to set up the tent in the garden and test how it works, says Per-Olov Wikberg.

Meets both experienced and inexperienced hikers

Ludmilla Wieslander is employed by the County Administrative Board as director of Naturum in Ammarnäs.

She meets mountain hikers daily in her job.

- My experience is that there are both those who are experienced super safe hikers, and those who are completely new and could use some tips.

What is the most common mistake you encounter?

- That people carry too much weight, it's more fun to hike with a light pack.

Of course, you need clothes for all weather, even for rain and freezing temperatures in the middle of summer.

One or two extra pairs of underwear and socks are enough, wash during the hike, she says.
