In view of the military tensions between China and Taiwan, the "speaker" of the US House of Representatives defended her visit to Taiwan last week.

Just because Chinese President Xi Jinping "has his own insecurities doesn't mean I let him do my congressman schedule," she told NBC television, in her first interview since returning from her Asia trip.

In it, she defended her stopover in Taipei, which has angered China and to which Beijing has responded with military drills near Taiwan.

It should not be acceptable for China's President to isolate Taiwan.

Xi is currently in a weak position.

"He's acting like a scared bully," she said in another interview with broadcaster MSNBC.

Her trip was intended to draw the American President's attention to the region.

Before she left, however, Joe Biden distanced herself from Pelosi and her plans.

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu previously defended Pelosi from criticism in an interview with CNN.

It is in his country's interest to welcome overseas supporters to counter Beijing's attempts to isolate the island nation.

China should not dictate to Taiwan who it welcomes.

Nevertheless, China's threat to his country is "more serious than ever" and the situation has deteriorated in recent years, even before Pelosi's visit.

China continued military maneuvers on Tuesday in response to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, despite last week saying they would only last until Sunday.

As the Chinese army announced, the focus was "on the organization of joint anti-submarine and naval attack operations".

Target practice was also held in the South China Sea and the Yellow Sea.

The Taiwanese military, in turn, practiced how to defend against a possible attack in the southernmost district of Pingtung. According to the military, the exercise lasted an hour and had been planned for some time.
