United Nations: The threat of a nuclear confrontation has re-emerged

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said today, Monday, that the danger of a nuclear confrontation has re-emerged after decades, calling on nuclear states to commit not to start using these weapons.

Guterres said any attack on a nuclear plant was a "suicidal thing", responding to reports of renewed Russian bombing of Zaporizhia in Ukraine, Europe's largest nuclear power plant.

Guterres made the remarks at a press conference in Tokyo after attending a ceremony in Hiroshima to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb dropped on the Japanese city.

He also called on Japan to halt public and private financing of coal projects as part of the country's commitments to reduce fossil fuel emissions.
