Russia informs US of suspension of START inspections

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has informed the United States that it will suspend inspection activities under the START Treaty to limit the spread of arms, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday, adding that Moscow remains committed to all provisions of the treaty.

The ministry added that Russia was forced to "resort to this measure as a result of Washington's insistence that it seeks to resume inspection activities under conditions that do not take into account the current realities."

She noted that "the conditions proposed by Washington create unilateral advantages in favor of the United States and effectively deprive

the Russian Federation of the right to conduct inspections on American soil."

The Kremlin told the United States last week that time was running out to negotiate an alternative to the New START treaty and that if it expires in 2026 without an alternative, it will weaken global security.
