Unidentified gunmen assassinated on Monday evening a security official of the Fatah movement in the Ain al-Hilweh camp for Palestinian refugees in southern Lebanon, while the motives for the attack were not clear.

Reuters quoted 3 Palestinian officials as saying that Saeed Aladdin was shot in the head by unknown assailants and later died of his wounds.

The leader of the Fatah movement in Lebanon, Munir al-Maqdah, said that Saeed Aladdin was charged with coordinating between the movement and the Lebanese security forces.

Another Palestinian source clarified that Aladdin held the rank of colonel and was the liaison and public relations officer in the Palestinian National Security with the Fatah movement, and indicated that he was shot several times.

And the French news agency quoted that the camp immediately witnessed tension, alertness and shooting.

The camp has witnessed sporadic clashes for years between Islamic factions and the Fatah movement led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians live in Lebanon, most of them in 12 refugee camps, the largest of which is Ain al-Hilweh camp near the city of Sidon.

Under an agreement concluded long ago, the Lebanese army will not enter these camps, where security is maintained by Palestinian factions.
