Five years ago, only one hospital in Sweden offered water birth, reports Sweden's radio.
Right now the option is available in eight regions and another nine will introduce the method - including Västernorrland.
- There is a demand among women and research shows that there are benefits regarding, among other things, pain relief, says Magdalena Elfving.
There are several advantages
Magdalena Elfving believes that there are no particular risks with giving birth in water.
However, staff must be trained.
The advantages of giving birth in water are that it can provide pain relief to the woman.
Research also shows that it can produce fewer grade 2 stretch marks.
- It results in fewer interventions.
It favors the normal course and that we don't have to be there and influence, says Magdalena Elfving.
The staff needs to be trained
The hope is that the first water birth will take place in Sundsvall already this autumn.
After that, the birth at Örnsköldsvik hospital will also offer the opportunity to bring your child into the world in water.
- It takes a bit of planning with the acquisition of a pool or bathtub and then the staff needs to go through a training session in a few days.
