The World Food Program is concerned about a food crisis in Sri Lanka

The United Nations World Food Program has expressed concern about the impact of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka on the food supply of the country's poor.

In a statement thanking Norway for its aid, amounting to about $500,000, the program added that about 6.3 million people - or three out of every 10 families - are at risk of food insecurity and need assistance.

He added that recent surveys show that 61% of families either do not have enough food, or they get food that does not contain the necessary nutrients, or they do not even get all meals regularly due to the acute emergency.

He added that an emergency program is being prepared to assist the 3.4 million people in Sri Lanka, who are most at risk of food insecurity and malnutrition.

The island nation to the south of India, with a population of about 22 million, is experiencing its worst economic crisis in decades.
