The European Union is concerned about the escalation in Gaza and calls for restraint

The spokesman for the European Union's foreign minister, Josep Borrell, said Saturday that the bloc is following the violence in the Gaza Strip with "grave concern" and calls on all parties to exercise "maximum restraint" in order to avoid a new escalation.

Peter Stano stressed in a statement that “Israel has the right to protect its civilian population, but everything possible must be done to prevent a broader conflict that would primarily affect the civilian population on both sides and lead to new victims and further suffering.”

He pointed out that "these recent events reaffirm the need to revive a political horizon and ensure a sustainable situation in Gaza."

For its part, the Israeli army said Saturday that it is preparing to launch raids for a "week" in the Gaza Strip, where it is stepping up strikes against the Islamic Jihad movement.
