Russia expresses grave concern over the escalation in Gaza

Russia expressed its grave concern over the escalation between Israel and the Islamic Jihad movement in the Gaza Strip, and called for maximum restraint.

"We are watching with great concern the development of events that could lead to the resumption of a large-scale military confrontation and aggravate the deterioration of the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza," said a statement by the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

Zakharova called on "all parties concerned to show maximum restraint, prevent the escalation of armed operations and immediately re-establish a sustainable ceasefire."

Zakharova considered that "the new escalation was caused by the Israeli army's bombing of the Gaza Strip on August 5, and Palestinian factions responded with a large-scale and indiscriminate bombardment of Israeli territory."
