Ferdinand Marcos junior,

the head of American diplomacy, Antony Blinken, therefore praised the “unshakable alliance” between Washington and Manila.

"Maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is vital not only for Taiwan, but also for the Philippines and many other countries," Blinken said.

Under a security pact signed in 1951, the US military has access to certain military bases on the island and can store military equipment there.

The former American colony is therefore more than ever a centerpiece for Washington, which seeks to counter Chinese influence in the region.

In this pact, the two countries assure of their "joint determination to defend themselves against armed attack, and...that they both recognize that an armed attack in the Pacific region against one of them would be dangerous to the peace and security of the other".
