A heatwave episode hit France this week, with peaks of 38°C recorded in Lyon.

The electricity network operator Enedis announced that power outages due to heat affected part of the city of Lyon, as well as certain streets in the suburbs around Villeurbanne and Caluire-et-Cuire.

"The high cumulative heat has led to breakdowns in the underground networks," added Enedis.

The distributor also added that urban areas are particularly affected by this “exceptional” phenomenon, because “tarred floors accumulate heat which weakens underground cables”.

The majority of breakdowns were able to be restored automatically in fifteen minutes and “in other cases, it is longer: Enedis agents must go on site to locate the breakdown”.

As the situation fluctuated, the electricity supplier was unable to give a precise figure of the households affected by these cuts.
