  Lightning struck Lafayette Square, opposite the White House, and "all four suffered serious, life-threatening injuries," said Vito Maggiolo, spokesman for the Washington, D.C., fire and emergency medical services agency.

  Maggiolo also said that the injured were two men and two women and had been taken to the hospital for treatment.

  At 7 p.m. that night, a severe thunderstorm hit Washington, D.C.

According to law enforcement sources, the victim was sheltering from the storm under a tree.
