In the United States, primary elections were held in five states on Tuesday August 2.

In the Republican camp, these elections have often turned in favor of candidates who adhere to the Trumpist discourse of the stolen election in 2020. And in particular in Arizona, in the west of the country.

It looks like a full house in Arizona.

Candidates who baselessly claim that the 2020 election was stolen and rigged are on course to win all of their party ballots.

This is the case for the post of Attorney General of the State, who is responsible for local justice;

for the Secretary of State, the person responsible for monitoring the regularity of elections, including federal elections;

and for the candidate for the Senate.

It is not yet certain for the post of governor.

The race is tight between the two candidates, Kari Lake and Karrin Taylor Robson.

There are still votes to be counted, but the one challenging the 2020 results, who wants to remove voting machines as well as postal voting, is in the lead.

Of course, this is still only an internal primary and these candidates will have to beat their Democratic opponents who hope to mobilize the moderate electorate in November.

But Arizona is not just any state: it is a “swing state”, one of the states that rocked the last presidential election.

One of those where the false accusations of fraud have been the most numerous.

And if the control of the elections were to fall into the hands of those who contest them, this could pose a serious democratic problem.
