At least four people were killed in a wildfire that swept the state of California, authorities announced, the day before yesterday, warning that the death toll from the worst fire in the state this year could rise further.

The rain and cold weather brought some relief to hundreds of firefighters fighting to protect the town of Yreka of 8,000 people, but the human cost of the fire continued to increase.

"There are four confirmed deaths and that number could rise," Siskiyo County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Courtney Cryde told AFP.

Two of the dead were found in Sunday's car, apparently burned while trying to escape.

No details were given about the two dead.

At least 3,000 people were told to evacuate their homes in and around Klamath River, while 100 facilities were destroyed.

"Our goal today is to communicate effectively with residents and ask them to comply with the eviction orders," Cryder added.

Our priority is to protect lives and property.”
