According to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, at about 12:30 Moscow time, the warehouse of Ozon, an e-commerce platform located in Moscow Oblast, caught fire.

Due to the collapse of the roof and the instantaneous entry of air, a strong convection was formed, which led to the rapid spread of the fire, and the fire area reached more than 50,000 square meters.

According to preliminary statistics, the fire has resulted in one death and 13 injuries, two of whom were hospitalized.

After the fire, nearly 1,000 employees were evacuated from the warehouse.

At present, the whereabouts of two staff members are still unknown.

At present, the Moscow region authorities have sent 150 firefighters and more than 30 pieces of equipment to the fire site, as well as three helicopters to participate in the firefighting.

Rescuers said the firefighting effort was complicated by the structural features of the building.

The Governor of Moscow Region personally directed the fire fighting, and two deputy ministers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations rushed to the scene to direct fire fighting and rescue operations. Medical personnel and ambulances also arrived at the scene for rescue.

According to the TASS news agency, the cause of the fire may have been a short circuit of equipment due to emergency operation of the power grid.

Other sources say the fire may have been caused by arson.

The cause of the fire is under further investigation.

The Moscow State Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the fire.

The Russian Federal Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings for alleged violations of fire safety requirements.

Ozon's corporate press service promised that orders lost in the fire would be returned to customers and sellers fully compensated.

Igor Jurgens, chairman of the All-Russian Union of Insurance Companies, said the warehouse is insured for 17 billion rubles.

It is reported that Ozon shares on the Moscow Stock Exchange fell nearly 4% on the day due to the fire, but the decline soon slowed to 0.4%.

Founded in 1998, Ozon is the largest comprehensive e-commerce platform in the emerging Russian e-commerce market and the only listed B2C platform in Russia.
