Extending the armistice in Yemen for an additional two months

On Tuesday evening, the United Nations announced the extension of the armistice in Yemen for an additional two months, noting that the agreement included a commitment by the two sides of the bloody conflict to intensify negotiations to reach an expanded armistice agreement as soon as possible.

"I am pleased to announce that the two parties have agreed to extend the armistice, on the same terms, for an additional two months, from August 2, 2022, to October 2, 2022," the UN envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said in a statement, a copy of which was received by AFP.

"This extension of the armistice includes a commitment by the parties to intensify negotiations to reach an expanded armistice agreement as soon as possible," he added.

Grundberg said that the expanded armistice proposal "will allow for an agreement on a transparent and effective exchange mechanism to pay the salaries of civil servants and civilian retirees on a regular basis, open roads in Taiz (southwest) and other governorates, and operate more travel destinations to and from Sanaa airport, The provision of fuel and the regular flow of it through the ports of Hodeidah” (West).

He considered that the expanded agreement "would also provide the opportunity to negotiate a comprehensive ceasefire and humanitarian and economic issues and to prepare for the resumption of the Yemeni-led political process under the auspices of the United Nations to reach a sustainable and just peace."

In his statement, the UN envoy stressed that "the main objective of the current truce remains to provide a tangible breakthrough for civilians in the provisions of the truce, and to create an environment conducive to achieving a peaceful settlement of the conflict through a comprehensive political process."

He said that during the coming weeks, he would intensify his engagement with the parties to ensure the full implementation of "all the parties' commitments to the armistice, including the implementation of the full number and regularity of flights to and from the agreed destinations from and to Sana'a International Airport, as well as the number of fuel ships entering the port of Hodeidah as stipulated in the agreement." armistice".

He considered that "it is also important to make progress on opening roads in Taiz and in other governorates to facilitate the free movement of millions of Yemeni women, men and children and to facilitate the flow of goods as well. The residents of Taiz and other governorates deserve to benefit from the truce in all its aspects."

Humanitarian organizations operating in Yemen welcomed the extension of the truce, calling for action to turn it into a lasting peace.
