The formalization of this joint candidacy will be made Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. local (4:30 p.m. GMT) at the Centenario stadium in the Uruguayan capital where the 1930 final between Uruguay and Argentina (4-2) was played.

The 2030 final would be played in the same stadium.

"As the World Cup celebrates its 100th anniversary, it must return to its original home, South America," Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez tweeted.

"For us, it should be called the 2030 Centenary World Cup," said Uruguayan Sports Minister Sebastian Bauza.

"What we have to focus on is the Centenary World Cup. The celebration of 100 years of the first World Cup will be there. Back to legend, back to basics!"

It would be the sixth edition of the World Cup carried out in South America, after those of 1930 (Uruguay), 1950 (Brazil), 1962 (Chile), 1978 (Argentina) and 2014 (Brazil).

But Spain and Portugal are also in the running and announced in June 2021 their joint candidacy for this same edition of 2030.

The United Kingdom and Ireland have abandoned the idea of another joint bid to focus on Euro 2028.

There are also reportedly talks for an Israeli bid alongside the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

In 1930 for the first edition, only 13 teams participated and the entire tournament was played in the same city - Montevideo - and in only three stadiums.

In 2030, there will be 48 teams and the joint organization of the four South American countries, a first for so many countries, provides matches in 15 stadiums.
