Between now and the elections, an interim government will have to find solutions to the thorny economic and political questions which have shaken the outgoing cabinet more than once.

These will be the fourth legislative elections in two years.

This is the fourth time that an interim government appointed by the president has taken over the country, recalls our correspondent in Sofia,

Damian Vodenitcharov

.

Never has Bulgaria experienced such political instability and never, since the fall of communism, has a government been forced to resign by a motion of no confidence supported by one of the partners in the ruling coalition.

During its six months of existence, the government of Kiril Petkov has known no truce.

The war in Ukraine, Macedonia's accession to the EU, the cut off of Russian gas supplies, galloping inflation of 17% over one year, constant political tensions... So many problems for future governments .

No stability

Opinion polls are hardly optimistic about political stability after the early elections.

We continue the change, the party of outgoing Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, could lose several points against his rival GERB of Boïko Borissov, at the head of the polls.

The pro-Russian and anti-European far right could also double its seats.

Kiril Petkov who had, at the end of the third legislative elections of the year in December, succeeded in forming a motley coalition, lost the support of one of the parties before being

overthrown by a motion of censure

after six months barely.

Since then, no party has managed to gather a sufficient majority to govern.

Hence the need to call the Bulgarians back to the polls.

Bulgaria has been plagued since the summer of 2020 by instability triggered by massive demonstrations against the conservative Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, then in power almost without interruption since 2009.
