Two dead as an international peacekeeping force fires at a border post in Congo

The United Nations peacekeeping force in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) said on Sunday that soldiers from the force's intervention unit there opened fire at a border post while returning from vacation, causing an unspecified number of deaths.

The incident at the point on the Congo-Uganda border in the restive eastern part of Congo is the latest to involve a peacekeeping mission, known as MONUSCO, which has faced days of protests.

It is not yet clear why the soldiers opened fire.

"This serious incident resulted in loss of life and serious injuries," said Bento Keita, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Congo.

Keita added that an investigation had been opened into the incident and the suspects had been arrested.
