According to The Independent, the president was called on to express his position on the situation in Ukraine after the contents of his wife's letter became known.

In her message, Sabina Higgins expressed her opinion that the fighting will continue until the world "convinces the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky, to agree to a ceasefire and negotiations."

With this letter, she drew criticism from the Irish parliamentarians.
