During the trip, Nancy Pelosi, along with five other people, will travel to four different countries.

It is about Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.

The purpose of the trip is to discuss trade, the pandemic, climate change, security and democratic governance, according to a statement from Nancy Pelosi's office.

Taiwan is not mentioned in the statement

The trip is scheduled within the next few days and Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Pelosi will visit on August 1 and 2.

Among other things, the delegation will meet President Halimah Yacob and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

There has previously been speculation that Nancy Pelosi is also going to the practically independent island nation of Taiwan, but the statement says nothing about a possible visit to the country.

Relations between China and the United States have been strained since reports that Nancy Pelosi would visit Taiwan.

Last week, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that it would "fundamentally upset the US-China relationship" if Nancy Pelosi chose to visit the country, the South China Morning Post reported.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also warned the US to interfere in relations with Taiwan as recently as Thursday when he spoke with US President Joe Biden.

China holds military exercises

On Saturday, in the same vein that China marked against speculation about Nancy Pelosi's visit, the Chinese military announced that they are holding military exercises at Pingtan Island opposite Taiwan.

According to China's state news agency Xinhua, it was about artillery exercises.

China believes that Taiwan has no right to its own foreign relations.

In 1949, after the Chinese Civil War, opponents of the Communist Party seized control of strategic Taiwan.

Despite economic ties of many billions of dollars, the countries have no official relations.

China continues to claim the country, but the US and its allies see the island nation as crucial for stability in the region.
