Xinhua News Agency, Yangon, July 31 (Reporter Zhang Dongqiang) The Myanmar National Defense and Security Council announced on July 31 that the agency held a meeting on the same day and unanimously decided to extend the national state of emergency for another six months in accordance with the relevant provisions of the current constitution.

  The announcement said that Min Aung Hlaing, chairman of the Myanmar National Management Committee and commander-in-chief of the National Defense Forces, said at the meeting that it would take time for the country to restore peace and hold elections in accordance with the constitution, and he proposed to continue to extend the national state of emergency.

  Under Myanmar's current constitution, the state of emergency can last for up to two years, with an initial one-year term, and then it can be extended every six months.

On January 31 this year, the Myanmar National Defense and Security Council announced an extension of the national state of emergency for six months.

  On February 1, 2021, Myanmar President Win Myint, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and some senior officials of the National League for Democracy were detained by the military.

Myanmar's military then declared a one-year state of emergency and state power was handed over to Defense Forces Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing.
