Automated captioning has been available for several years on, for example, YouTube and more recently also on Instagram stories for a limited number of countries.

Now the function has been rolled out on Tiktok - but the difference is that the caption does not need to be activated by the person who uploads the content.

It will be there automatically and users can choose whether it should be visible or not when watching the clips.

The tools are, like on Instagram, so far only available in certain countries.

Increased availability

The idea is to increase accessibility for more people to take part in content, such as the deaf and hard of hearing, but also for those who choose to consume video without sound – something that Hajan Jabar, who is hearing impaired, thinks is positive:

- Everyone should be able to take part in social media, she says.

Is it too late to bring these features only now?

- I don't think it's too late, but I think it's sick that it's never prioritized at launch.

That it's not just there from the beginning, says Hajan Jabar.

Tiktok replied in an email to SVT Nyheter that they do not know when the function will come to Sweden, but that they hope to launch the function in more languages in the coming months.

Watch as Hajan Jabar shows examples of what it can look like in the clip above.
