Death toll from Kentucky floods rises to 25

Kentucky Governor Andy Basher said that at least 25 people have died as a result of the devastating floods that hit the state.

"We received shocking news about eastern Kentucky today. We are still in the search and rescue phase. Our death toll has risen to 25, and this number is likely to increase," Basher tweeted.

According to the information currently available, there are 4 children among the victims.

Authorities said it could take weeks before all the victims were found and that it was unclear how many people were missing because there was no mobile phone reception in large parts of the disaster area.

Flash floods and landslides occurred in the wake of torrential rains in Kentucky and the neighboring states of Virginia and West Virginia.

Many people were surprised by the floods on Thursday night.

Hundreds of people have already been rescued using boats and helicopters.

US President Joe Biden approved the request to declare Kentucky a major disaster area, allowing federal funding to assist recovery efforts.

It is noteworthy that last December, more than 70 people died in the devastating tornadoes that hit the state.
