New York declares emergency over monkeypox

The US state of New York declared a state of emergency due to the continuing spread of monkeypox, and the number of confirmed cases of the disease in the state reached 1,383.

"I am declaring a disaster emergency to reinforce our ongoing efforts to respond to the monkeypox outbreak," New York Governor Cathy Hauckol said on Twitter.

She added that more than one in four cases of the disease in the United States is in New York.

Yesterday, Brazil and Spain reported their first two deaths linked to monkeypox outside Africa.
