Electricity has been cut to the parliament, many public buildings and landmarks in the German capital, Berlin, due to the energy crisis.

It was dark for the first time in the state assembly in the central district of Berlin.

The Senate administration has declared that it is responsible for 200 buildings that are no longer lit at night, including the Victory Square Column, Red City Hall and Charlottenburg Palace.

She said the lighting will be gradually reduced over the next three to four weeks.

Electricity costs amount to about 40,000 euros annually in the institutions supervised by the Senate in Berlin.
