Russian energy company "Gazprom" announced the cessation of gas supplies to Latvia due to violation of the conditions for the selection of gas.

This is stated in the Telegram channel of the company.

“Today, PJSC Gazprom stopped gas supplies to Latvia as part of the July application due to violation of the conditions for gas withdrawal,” the message says.

The Latvian gas transmission operator Conexus also confirmed the suspension of gas supplies from Russia from July 30, TASS reports.

Earlier, the company Latvijas gāze, which is the country's largest seller of natural gas, reported that they were purchasing Russian gas, but not directly.

The head of the enterprise, Aigars Kalvitis, refused to disclose the name of the intermediary organization, citing commercial secrets.

Thus, the company pays for the supply of blue fuel in euros, which contradicts Moscow's position.

Since April 1, Gazprom has transferred payment for gas supplies to unfriendly countries, which include Latvia, into rubles as a response to Western sanctions.

It is worth noting that in May, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgar Rinkevich announced the country's intention to "do without Russian gas."

In June, the Prime Minister of the Republic, Krisjanis Karins, confirmed that Latvia is no longer going to buy blue fuel from the Russian Federation, despite the fact that in 2021, approximately 90% of imported gas came from Russia.

And in mid-July, the Latvian Parliament approved amendments to the Energy Law, which provide for a ban on the supply of Russian gas from January 1, 2023.

At the same time, gas prices in Latvia are steadily growing.

The last increase occurred on July 1, when the tariff for households increased by 65.6%, for consumers - by 74.8%, and for organizations - by 89.9%.

At the same time, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell accused Russia of allegedly using gas as pressure on the EU countries.

At the same time, he called on the EU member states to immediately switch to savings in the energy sector in order to completely free themselves from “Russian dependence” in the future.

“We decided that we would free ourselves from such a strong energy dependence on Russia: first from coal, then from oil and gas over a longer period in order to adapt.

We will do it, and Russia knows it,” said the head of European diplomacy.

According to Alexander Frolov, deputy general director of the National Energy Institute, Riga should be satisfied with what happened, since the country is “getting rid of the oppressive dependence on the Russian Federation”, which is a priori “terrible”, “terrible”, requiring the most immediate counteraction.

“In this regard, the current development of the situation between Gazprom and Latvia is more than logical, it fully fits into the paradigm of reducing energy dependence on Russia.

In theory, the Latvian leadership can now refer to the possibility of obtaining gas through Poland via a gas pipeline connecting Poland and Lithuania.

Theoretically, some volumes can be compensated, ”the RT expert said.

As the political scientist Ruslan Balbek noted, the Latvian Russophobic dances ended with the expected result.

“And now we will witness a new intrigue: how Latvia will buy Russian gas from intermediaries - and significantly more expensive.

Was it worth the Balts trying so hard?

Apparently, praise from Washington costs much more than the well-being of its own citizens.

And for sure they promise all kinds of support, of course moral, and an honorary order on the chest “For the fight against Russia”.

Well, citizens will survive somehow - after all, they must understand that times are not easy now, ”he said in an interview with RT.
