Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, the prices of hydrocarbons have soared.

Consequence: the oil giants have recorded significant profits in recent months.

TotalEnergies, Repsol, Shell… the biggest groups all published record results on Thursday 28 July.

With the surge in the price of hydrocarbons on the markets, black gold and gas have paid off big for the oil giants this year. 

The British Shell records a net profit multiplied by five in the second quarter, to 18 billion dollars.

The Spanish group Repsol saw its net profit jump by 165% compared to last year.

On the French side, TotalEnergies more than doubled its profit to $5.7 billion.

These results have revived the debate on the possible taxation of these superprofits. 

In Europe, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain have announced the introduction of an exceptional tax on the excess profits of companies in the energy sector.

A measure that can allow states to recover several billion euros.  

For the moment, France refuses to do so, since the proposed 25% surcharge presented to the National Assembly last Saturday

was narrowly rejected

.

The executive believes that companies should be encouraged to make efforts to preserve purchasing power, rather than taxing them.
