This Thursday, July 28, Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has been in power for a year.

A day that coincides with the national holiday.

But for Castillo, there is little to celebrate.

It ends a turbulent year, marked by many changes of ministers and, above all, a record of five legal inquiries opened against the former trade unionist and teacher.

At the low point of his popularity, Pedro Castillo must find new impetus for the rest of his term, knowing that Parliament is not letting up the pressure and hopes to have him dismissed in the near future.

When Pedro Castillo will speak this Thursday before parliamentarians, on the occasion of the national holiday, the atmosphere will be tense.

Last March, he escaped impeachment because the highly fragmented political parties failed to muster the necessary 87 votes.

Observers doubt he can stay in power much longer.

His predecessors Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Martin Vizcarra had survived a first impeachment attempt but not the second.

Like Pedro Castillo, they were accused of corruption.

The current president collects judicial inquiries: five have been opened against him in the past year.

A shame for someone who has made the fight against corruption a priority in his electoral campaign.

It is therefore not surprising that his popularity is at an all-time low: more than two-thirds of Peruvians disapprove of the left-wing president who has failed to fulfill another of his commitments, that of fighting poverty.

For the rest of his mandate, he promised to do better, in particular to reduce inequalities.

Peruvians are especially wondering if he will be able to make his government more stable.

During his first year, Pedro Castillo fired an average of one minister every seven days.
