With comprehensive controls, the city wants to take action in the next few weeks against the ban on barbecuing in parks and green spaces.

The city police of the regulatory office have already issued 18 administrative offense procedures and 73 warnings, as the city announced.

A total of 92 green spaces have been inspected since June 29.

According to the information, there were many violations and several cases in which those concerned wanted to run away from the city police officers, especially in Ostpark.

Because of the prolonged drought and to protect the green spaces, barbecuing is prohibited in all public barbecue areas in Frankfurt, the city announced.

Nine such barbecue areas are designated in the green spaces in the city area and in the two forest play parks.

Due to the current risk of forest fires, electric and gas grills are also not permitted.

In principle, the majority of Frankfurters adhere to the ban, the punishable violations were mainly detected at the beginning, it said.

"Currently, the city police only have to intervene occasionally to regulate." Nevertheless, there have been exceptions.

"Awareness talks" with barbecuers

In Ostpark, a family tried to flee at the sight of city employees.

However, they were able to stop two people and file an administrative offense report.

They held "awareness-raising talks" with 31 groups of people who were found having a barbecue in Ostpark and initiated three administrative offense proceedings.

Anyone who disregards the ban must expect a fine of 180 euros.

In addition, the city police recorded many violations in the Schwanheim forest play park and on the Lohrberg.

In the former she found two abandoned hearths still smoking.

The culprits could not be found.

The employees held talks with eight groups of people having a barbecue in the forest play park.

How long the barbecue ban applies

The city police officers checked 15 groups of people on the Lohrberg.

The grills were deleted "immediately and with full understanding of the sense of the ban," the statement said.

In only one case was an administrative offense reported.

In the Rebstockpark, in the Nordpark, on the southern and northern banks of the Main, in the Sinaipark and in the Sommerhofpark, the inspectors found “a few people barbecuing” who, however, all showed understanding.

The ban continues to apply until the Parks Office lifts it.

Frankfurt's green spaces would continue to be monitored intensively.

Smoking shisha is also currently prohibited in the parks due to the risk of fire.

Barbecuing on green spaces has become increasingly popular in recent years, but has also led to discussions, for example because of the sometimes chaotic conditions on the Lohrberg.

At the same time, there were more and more restrictions.

In the particularly dry years 2018 to 2020, the city also issued a barbecue ban.

The restrictions that were already in place in spring 2020 had another reason.

At that time, barbecuing in public places was one of the gatherings that were banned by the state government in the course of the fight against the corona pandemic.
