The jacket that Buzz Aldrin wore during his trip to the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in July 1969 was sold on Tuesday at auction in New York.

The garment went for $2.7 million, according to Sotheby's.

This white jacket, on which we distinguish the American flag, the acronyms of NASA and the Apollo 11 mission and the name "E. ALDRIN" was part of the personal collection of the American astronaut.

The latter, now 92 years old, recently decided to put it up for sale.

A total bid of 8.2 million euros

"The time seemed to have come to share with the world these objects which, for many, are the symbols of a historic moment", declared Buzz Aldrin when announcing this sale.

“For me, [they] have always remained personal memories of a life dedicated to science and exploration.

“This exceptionally rare garment was coveted by several bidders for nearly ten minutes before being sold to a buyer by telephone,” Sotheby's said in a statement.

In total, auctions totaled $8.2 million for 68 lots sold out of 69 offered.

A flight plan notably sold for $819,000.

In the lot catalog, Buzz Aldrin specified that the jacket is distinct from the spacesuit he wore when he walked on the lunar ground with Neil Armstrong.

The garment was, however, worn during the round trip (three days each time) aboard the Apollo 11 spacecraft. The suits worn on the Moon by Armstrong and Aldrin are part of the collections of the National Air Museum. and Space in Washington.
