• United States Can Donald Trump be impeached?

Donald Trump has returned to Washington.

The former president of the United States returned to the US capital on Tuesday, from which he left on January 20, 2021 alone,

with no one but his family

, and repudiated by the entire political arc of the country after the assault of his followers on Congress to try to prevent the ratification of Joe Biden's electoral victory in the November 2020 elections.

Trump's return, however,

was not triumphant

.

The former president, who is preparing his third candidacy for the presidency, did not carry out one of the massive acts that he is accustomed to celebrating.

Instead, he launched a political speech, on a low-key stage, the

think tank

America First Policy Institute (AFPI), which is one of the most important institutions in the growing network of think tanks.

studios and

lobbies

aimed at reinforcing

Trump's nationalist message in the US capital.

The speech, which had not finished at the close of this edition, focused on the increase in crime and the defense of police action in the United States.

It is an issue far from the most controversial elements of

Trumpism

, but one that

has a special resonance among the electorate

, in which concern is growing over the rise in robberies, robberies and murders, sometimes in the heart of cities.

And, like everything in American society today, it also has a component of identity politics, since it affects, albeit indirectly, race relations, policy towards minorities, and the priorities of public powers.

But, although it had a relatively low profile, Trump's

second visit

to the US capital was also a sign of victory.

When he left on January 20, 2021, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy was one of the leaders of Trump's own party who had declared that the then president was responsible for the assault on Capitol Hill.

Today, McCarthy has tried to boycott the House of Representatives Committee investigating that event, and has repeatedly asked

Donald Trump to support his re-election this year.

McCarthy's humiliation is due to a very simple reason: without Trump's support,

a Republican has a hard time winning the primary

.

In an overwhelming display of power, the former president is on his way to getting the ten representatives of that party who voted in favor of his

impeachment

for the assault on Congress to lose the primaries

and be erased from the face of American politics

.

To this day, Trump has no rival in the race for the Republican nomination.

The best example is that of one of the party's candidates for 2024, the former vice president with Trump, Mike Pence, who yesterday gave a speech in Washington

with the clear intention of presenting himself as an alternative in the presidential race

.

During question time, Pence admitted that he has no political disagreement with Trump.

It is an admirable statement, given that the 2,000

Trump supporters

who stormed the Capitol were chanting "Let's hang Pence!", for his refusal to break the law and torpedo the ratification of Biden's victory.

Even the wildly popular Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, is, for now, a distant second in the preferences of Republican voters.

So Trump returned to Washington on Tuesday

in what may be the prelude to another four years

from January 20, 2025.
