Xinhua News Agency, United Nations, July 25 (Reporter Wang Jiangang) United Nations Secretary-General Guterres announced on the 25th the appointment of senior Chinese diplomat Li Junhua as the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs.

  Li Junhua will succeed Liu Zhenmin, also from China, according to a statement issued by the UN Secretary-General's Spokesperson's Office.

Guterres thanked Liu Zhenmin for his dedication to the United Nations during his tenure as Deputy Secretary-General.

  The statement said that Li Junhua will put forward views and visions on promoting multilateral economic and social cooperation, and he pledged to work with all parties to further implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to serve member states.

Previously, he contributed to numerous meetings of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, as well as other multilateral meetings such as the G20, APEC, ASEM, BRICS, etc.

  Li Junhua joined the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985 and is currently the Chinese Ambassador to Italy and San Marino. He previously served as Director-General of the International Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar, and Minister Counselor for Political Affairs of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations.
