While like 12 other departments, the Bouches-du-Rhône are placed under heat wave orange vigilance by Météo-France this Sunday, the city of Marseille has decided to no longer charge entry to municipal swimming pools, to allow all those who wish to refresh themselves.

A news that delights the regulars.

While this Sunday, 13 departments in the south-east, including Bouches-du-Rhône, are placed on heatwave orange vigilance, the city of Marseille has decided to make all its municipal swimming pools free until August 15.

No more 3 € at the full price to go to the swimming pool.

Now it's free.

A cost of around 100,000 euros

Laury and her two friends hear the good news and are already planning to come back more often this summer.

"So we want to come back. Except there will be more people," they smile.

Regulars also welcome the measure.

"It's a godsend for everyone with the heat wave. It can encourage people to come more often than if it were paying," admits Mustapha, who came to swim a few lengths.

"It's very good that the children can go and have fun and not suffer from the heat wave", adds Messaouda.

For Sébastien Jibrayel, deputy mayor in charge of sports, the additional cost for the city is the price to pay to cope with the heat wave.

"In an exceptional situation, exceptional measure, there is a fairly high attendance rate. Of course, that has a cost. On total free admission for the general public, we are not far from 100,000 €."

While other episodes of heat waves have already been announced for the coming summers, Sébastien Jibrayel says he plans to appeal to the State to finance free swimming pools.
