Two strong earthquakes hit southern Iran, rescue teams are roaming the region

Two strong earthquakes hit the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan on Saturday, an official said, prompting authorities to deploy search and rescue teams to the affected areas.

"So far we have not received any reports of serious damage, but the two earthquakes hit large areas and assessment work is still going on," Mokhtar Salahshour, head of the Red Crescent branch in the region, told Iranian state television.

Iranian state media said the two quakes had a magnitude of 5.7 and 5.8, but the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said one of the earthquakes had a magnitude of 5.5.

In early July, at least five people were killed and 49 injured in a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that hit an area near the epicenter of Saturday's quake.
