Xinhua News Agency, Jinan, July 20th, title: "Give agriculture the wings of science and technology"

On November 27, 2013, General Secretary Xi Jinping came to Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences to inspect the promotion of agricultural development by technological innovation.

Wang Shufen, a researcher at the Vegetable Research Institute of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, introduced the application of innovative technology in vegetable breeding and planting to the general secretary.

Recently, a reporter from Xinhua News Agency visited Wang Shufen and listened to her story of her struggle to keep in mind the general secretary's entrustment and enrich the "Chinese vegetable basket" with technological innovation——

That day, General Secretary Xi Jinping came to our intelligent greenhouse.

Seeing the rows of hydroponic vegetables such as small rape and rapeseed, the general secretary stopped and looked carefully.

I set up the floating cultivation bed, displayed the nutrient solution being recycled in the hydroponic tank, and introduced the scientific and technological innovations to the general secretary.

Compared with soil culture, hydroponic vegetables are cleaner and safer, have a shorter production cycle, and can save fertilizer costs and achieve a water-saving cycle.

Harvesting more crops can also increase farmers' income.

Ordinary people can also grow a "small vegetable garden" on their balcony.

General Secretary Xi Jinping urged us to give agriculture the wings of science and technology, to meet the needs of eating delicious and safe, and vigorously develop high-quality and safe agricultural products.

Shandong is a big agricultural province, and facility vegetables are one of the most characteristic "agricultural products" in Shandong.

Bearing in mind the entrustment of General Secretary Xi Jinping, I made up my mind to apply more technology to the development of the vegetable industry based on local characteristics, to help farmers increase their income and benefit the dining table of the common people.

In recent years, our team has made new achievements in technical research fields such as the selection and breeding of new vegetable varieties, the intensive seedling breeding of main vegetables, and the green prevention and control of pests and diseases. Six new technologies have become the main agricultural technologies in Shandong Province.

Some high-end vegetable seeds in the domestic market were once more dependent on imports.

By continuously innovating excellent germplasm and breeding technology, and accelerating the selection and breeding of new varieties of high-quality vegetables with resistance to stress, we continue to promote the localization of imported vegetable seeds and the internationalization of domestic famous and high-quality varieties.

Cabbage and radish originally originated in my country, but high-end spring and summer varieties were once monopolized by imported seeds.

In order to solve this situation, our team formed several key research groups to make breakthroughs little by little.

In winter, sow and raise seedlings in a warm shed in winter; collect and test seeds in summer.

In this way, after years of exploration and progress, and then integrating and applying the research results, new varieties of cabbage and radish that can effectively replace imports have been bred.

Today, the market share of domestic vegetable seeds in Shouguang, Shandong has increased from 54% before 2010 to more than 70%.

The zucchini, which once had a market share of more than 80% of imported varieties, has basically achieved full replacement of domestic seeds.

General Secretary Xi Jinping's exhortation urged me to enrich the "Chinese vegetable basket" through technological innovation.

I will continue to keep a close eye on the development needs of farmers and rural areas, and strive to "walk the road" and "gain experience" for the high-quality development of the vegetable industry, so that people can eat reliable, high-quality vegetables.
