The committee of inquiry into the storming of the Capitol has shown that the President-elect helped to create the highly dangerous situation on January 6, 2021, then enjoyed it as a spectator and did not want to defuse it, even at the insistence of close employees.

The committee put a spotlight on Trump's environment.

Closest associates, even daughter Ivanka, asked him to call off the mob.

One security adviser even resigned when he understood that the supreme commander didn't want to stop the insurgents, he wanted to encourage them.

The base prefers to believe Trump's stab-in-the-back legends

Again the question arises: Why only then?

Shouldn't all patriots in the White House have resigned at the latest when it became clear that Trump would not accept being voted out?

However, would it have been better to leave Trump alone with figures like his lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who encouraged him in his delusion?

No such excuse has the congressional Republicans who let Trump do as he pleases.

Rep. Liz Cheney rightly reminded parliamentary leaders Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy of how outraged they, too, had blamed Trump after the attack on the Capitol - only to backtrack days later because Trump's stab-in-the-back legends resonated better with the grassroots than the grim reality of the attempted coup.

Republican opportunism is unforgivable.
