Drivers who have been fined repeatedly for accessing the Plaza Elíptica low-emissions zone between February 22, the day the warning phase ended, and May 2, will only receive a sanction from the Madrid City Council.

This was announced this Tuesday during the municipal plenary session by the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, after continuous complaints from those affected.

The municipal government will review "ex officio" all these sanctioning files and

will keep "only" the first of them until May 2

.

"From there, all subsequent sanctions will be canceled to avoid confusion in this regard," said the councilor, who stressed that the intention of the corporation is "to reduce pollution at the worst point of air quality "of the entire city and not "the collection effort" and that in this case there have been "confusions with the advance notice"

Because there are several vehicles that accumulated several dozen penalties accumulated on consecutive days and that, according to those affected, was due to failures in the signaling of the new low-emissions zone applied by the Consistory.

A situation that also occurred in Central Madrid, when this space was put into operation during the Government of Manuela Carmena

.

In this way, the mayor has advanced the favorable direction of the vote of his municipal group to the Vox proposal on this issue, which includes an amendment from PSOE and Más Madrid to improve communication in areas that have traffic restrictions.

Because, as highlighted by the mayor, many of the sanctioned behaviors are due to "confusion" by

drivers who circulate without the environmental badge as they pass through the A-42 tunnel located in Plaza Elíptica.

At this time, the Environment and Mobility Area is studying the number of sanctions that must be withdrawn, since some of those affected accumulate almost fifty sanctions.

That is why the complaints have been made in recent weeks by the Association of Vehicles Affected by Environmental Restrictions (Avarm).

A circumstance that has also been criticized by the opposition parties to the right and left of the municipal government.

It was Vox who presented the proposal urging the corporation to withdraw these fines because

the "Madrid Central de Carmena resurrected by the mayor" is a "collection machine"

, its spokesman, Javier Ortega Smith, has stated in statements to the media, who has accused Almeida of "trying to appropriate" the measure proposed by his formation.

In a similar vein, the spokesperson for the PSOE, Mar Espinar, has pointed out Almeida for

"appropriating what is not his"

since, in his opinion, the abolition of these fines for drivers sanctioned on repeated occasions "It is a measure that comes to the Plenary through the PSOE and Más Madrid".

Although the original proposal was made by Vox and the two municipal groups on the left added their amendments.

For her part, from Más Madrid, Rita Maestre, has pointed out that "as we had already warned"

the low-emissions zone set up by the current municipal government is "a botched job"

.

That is why there have been repeated sanctions on vehicles without an environmental difference.

However, the spokeswoman for the group on the left has welcomed "the change in position" of the corporation.
