“There has been news in the UK press that Elizabeth Truss, the foreign secretary, may demand an agreement with Turkey similar to the asylum partnership agreement with Rwanda.

We hope that these allegations that have been made public about Ms Truss are unfounded,” the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Bilgić recalled that Turkey had already taken in "the largest number of refugees in the world in the last eight years."

It is out of the question for Istanbul to take on even more burdens, he stressed.

The diplomat said that Turkey does not intend to be a "camp for refugees".

In June, Liz Truss confirmed that the United Kingdom would send illegal migrants out of the country to Rwanda.
